Renault would have Alonso back - SymondsE-mail

Renault would be happy to have Fernando Alonso back at the wheel of an Enstone-built car. Engineering director Pat Symonds, instrumental in the Spaniard's back to back titles in 2005 and 2006, refuses to rule out a scenario where Alonso returns to the French squad.

"I bet he's glad he's not with us this year since we haven't come up with a car he'd want to drive," the Briton told the magazine F1 Racing.

"He is a damn good driver though and we'd happily have him back."

Symonds thinks Alonso, 25, might have decided to switch to McLaren primarily because of the speculation at the time about Renault's future in formula one.

"They were strong rumours so I absolutely don't criticise him for taking the decision to leave," he said.

But he added that "I know engineers who have left us to join other teams who have then come back saying it wasn't quite what they thought it would be."

Alonso to leave McLaren if team found guiltyE-mail

Fernando Alonso could choose to leave McLaren if the Mercedes-powered team is penalised by the FIA next Thursday. A clause in the Spaniard's three-year contract allows the agreement to be broken if his reputation or image is damaged through an action of the team, according to the newspaper Diario As.

Ron Dennis-led McLaren faces an extraordinary hearing of the World Motor Sport Council next week for, regarding the Stepney-gate spy scandal, allegedly breaching Article 151c of the International Sporting Code.

The Article relates to "any fraudulent conduct or any act prejudicial to the interests of any competition or to the interests of motor sport generally", allowing the FIA to apply penalties ranging from fines to disqualification.

Piquet enters frame for Spyker seatE-mail

Multiple drivers could fill axed Spyker racer Christijan Albers' seat for the remaining seven races in 2007.
That is the latest admission of the Dutch team's boss Colin Kolles, as speculation at the Nurburgring suggests for the first time that Renault test driver Nelson Piquet Jr - managed by Flavio Briatore - could have now entered the frame.

The son of triple world champion Nelson Piquet is competing principally with Christian Klien and Narain Karthikeyan for the drive, with Kolles telling the news agency Sport-Informations-Dienst (sid) that Spyker will select drivers who can contribute financially to the team.

"A formula one team does not live on air," he said.

Kolles said teammates for Spyker regular Adrian Sutil could even be assigned on a race-by-race basis.

"However continuity would of course be better," he acknowledged.

Underfinanced current substitute driver, the debutant Markus Winkelhock, ended Friday of the European grand prix slowest of all and - in the afternoon practice session - beached in the gravel.

Piquet has 'chance' for Renault seat - BriatoreE-mail

Nelson Piquet Jr could find his way onto the formula one grid next year with Renault. The German specialist magazine Auto Motor und Sport quotes the team's boss and Piquet's manager, Flavio Briatore, as confirming the possibility of a different race lineup for the 2008 season.

"He has a good chance to sit in the car next year," Briatore said, referring to test driver Piquet, the son of Brazil's triple world champion in the 80s.

Auto Motor und Sport said veteran Giancarlo Fisichella's contract runs out at the end of the year, making him the more likely of the current pairing - also featuring rookie Finn Heikki Kovalainen - to make way for the 21-year-old.

Piquet, meanwhile, is reportedly scheduled to drive on at least two of the three days at the upcoming Jerez test.

F1's Bernie preparing Arsenal bid (UPDATE)E-mail

Bernie Ecclestone at the Nurburgring refused to deny reports that he is preparing a bid to buy the famous north London football club Arsenal. According to the Daily Mirror, F1's chief executive is locked in a battle with rival bidder Stan Kroenke, an American, who is apparently prepared to spend more than (US) $1.3 billion for the club known as the Gunners.

"It's good if somebody is saying that, because maybe I will be approached and maybe it will be cheap," Bernie told Reuters on Saturday.

The Mirror reported that Arsenal officials might be happier with a British owner, and a source said of 76-year-old Ecclestone's rival bid: "It's more than just a spectator's interest."

Another insider added: "When Bernie does something he does it properly."

Ecclestone revealed two years ago that, with Renault boss and friend Flavio Briatore, he made a failed bid for the Chelsea football club.

Bernie said the pair "had the money" before fellow billionaire Roman Abramovich rolled into town.

And, referring to the fact that he often attends Chelsea games, he commented on Saturday: "Look at what a problem I'd be in with Chelsea if I bought Arsenal."

Renault tweaks aero chief lineup
Tuesday 26 June at 09:40 : F1 team Renault has tweaked the lineup of its aerodynamics department, as Pat Symonds announced that the "tide is turning" following a difficult start to the 2007 season.

Renault won the world championships in 2005 and 2006 with Fernando Alonso at the wheel but this season with the R27 car fell behind the leading trio Ferrari, McLaren and even BMW-Sauber.

Engineering veteran Symonds said this week, however, that Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen are now hot on BMW's heels, having pulled out of the midfield over the last few races.

"We take a lot of comfort from the fact that after a poor start to the year, we are pulling it back so rapidly," the Briton insisted.

Coinciding with the positive trend, aerodynamics chief Dino Toso has been promoted to lead Renault's new CFD centre at Enstone, with former deputy technical director James Allison moving in to head the wind tunnel.

"We believe this is the right time to make the change to ensure that our work for 2008 progresses at full speed, while the team in the wind tunnel continues to push forward with development for the remainder of the 2007 season," technical director Bob Bell said.

Interview with Kovalainen —— 。。

Interview with Kovalainen

Heikki KovalainenAfter scoring his best result of the season in the Canadian Grand Prix, Heikki Kovalainen has enjoyed another strong weekend in Indianapolis to earn his best grid position so far.

Autosport.com caught up with the Finn to find out how life was going at Renault, what his weekend had been like and what he thought about the strange rumours linking him with Williams.

Q: How much of a help has it been this weekend to have a fairly straightforward run through practice with no dramas or incidents?

Heikki Kovalainen: "I think the qualifying result shows that it has been a different story. Obviously I missed a lot of practice time in Montreal due to mistakes, and did not really have time to setup the car before qualifying.

"This has been a straightforward weekend without incidents and technical problems. And straightaway the result is much better. So for sure it helps to have a more straightforward weekend now."

Q: How was qualifying?

Kovalainen: "No big problems. Everything is going okay. All the practice with the car we have been able to improve it little by little.

"Things went pretty well. In first qualifying the lap was quite good with the harder tyre. In second qualifying it was not a fantastic lap, but in any case it was a reasonable lap with no big mistakes.

"And then in Q3, I burned a bit of fuel, we went on the harder tyre and then we put the softer tyre for the last run. And the last lap was very good.

"We have a good strategy for the race. We hope we can go reasonably long and score some good points as well.

Q: Are you simply happy to have a good qualifying result?

Kovalainen: "Yes, and for the team. We are happy to be where we are. But of course we want to get better. We want to improve our pace and our position, but at the moment we feel we have done a good job today, pretty much maximising what we had."

Q: Was the result in Canada a help for your confidence?

Kovalainen: "No. I have been always confident, it is the other people who thought I was losing my confidence. I had no problem with my confidence.

"After one or two bad races, it is part of life. I can get over it very easily. Now we are back on a normal way. No magic happened in the last week. We have done all the practice sessions, we have been able to improve the car and I have got a good feeling."

Q: In the last few weeks, have you noticed a real improvement with the car?

Kovalainen: "Since Monaco, as soon as we got the new front wing the car has been a lot better and a lot more consistent. Of course we are still not as fast as McLaren. We want to get back to win races, but we are going in the right direction and we will keep working hard."

Q: Where do you think Renault stand at the moment?

Kovalainen: "I think we are pretty much where we are now. After practice we thought maybe we could be challenging the BMWs and Nick Heidfeld, but we were not quite able to do it. We knew that the top four and McLaren are, for sure, on their own at the moment. I think the position where I am now is pretty much where we are."

Q: How confident are you for race pace?

Kovalainen: "I am quite confident looking at the running on Saturday morning. The long run pace seems to be quite okay, so we should not have any particular worries. I think everybody has got to manage their tyres, and so do we, but I feel confident. It is certainly better to start there and the back of the grid."

Q: What about the start, with such a long run down to the first corner?

Kovalainen: "It is possible to overtake. The reaction time to the light will be very important, because there is such a long straight line. Even a little bit of a sleepy start and you will lose positions. But I am looking forward to the start. It is certainly possible to overtake into the first corner."

Q: What was your reaction to the rumours that have come out linking you to Williams?

Kovalainen: "I don't read too much into that. I am quite happy where I am at the moment, and honestly if there was something serious going on I would be the first one to know. And since last weekend there have not been any complaints about anything and I find it a little bit funny after my best result of the year that these kind of rumours come.

"In any case, I will keep my focus on the business and not read too much into these rumours. The first time I heard about it was when other people spoke to me about it, and my first reaction was that it was funny."

Heikki Kovalainen

(Formula Renault UK)

Fisco

Lewis Hamilton

Alex Wurz

Alex Wurz

Wurz

Robert Kubica

Anthony Davidson

Adrian Sutil

Kubica sidelined, BMW's Vettel to race

DailyF1News: "Kubica sidelined, BMW's Vettel to race
Thursday 14 June at 23:44 : Robert Kubica will sit out the US this weekend despite passing the FIA's cognitive and physical examination on Thursday."

The Pole, who was hospitalised with a sprained ankle, minor bruising and mild concussion after his huge accident in Montreal four days ago, told reporters on Thursday that he is feeling no ill-effects and wants to race at Indianapolis.

But after the exam led by the FIA's medical delegate Gary Hartstein inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's medical centre in the afternoon, it was decided that 22-year-old Kubica should not return to the wheel of his BMW-Sauber for risk that a second accident so soon after a concussion could cause serious injury.

He will be examined again at Magny Cours in two weeks but, given that he passed both the cognitive and physical elements of the FIA tests here, it is almost certain that Kubica will resume his seat for the French .

His place this weekend, meanwhile, will be taken by BMW test driver Sebastian Vettel, who will make his grand prix debut on Sunday at the age of 19.——其实这个宝宝我还是有蛮喜欢的,不知道为什么哦,当然和雷诺家出来的宝宝不好比的咯!

It means that BMW-Sauber's US GP lineup will be all-German, with Vettel racing alongside team regular Nick Heidfeld.

Interestingly, Ralf Schumacher told reporters on Thursday that Kubica should be allowed to race, despite being twice hospitalised in crashes against the famed Indianapolis banking in past years.

"I heard that (Kubica's) crash looked worse than it was, because the angle he hit meant that the forces were not so large," the Toyota driver said.

"So, if he wants to race, why not?"——知道你拉二胡比较有撞的经验了啦!

Heikki, the press has been talking about a disagreement between you and Nelson, so what’s it all about?
HK: It’s absolutely nothing. I was asked a question and I wanted to make a jokey reply and it was taken literally! Nelson and I talked about it today and we had a laugh. It was a joke, not an attack on him. In short, it wasn’t a boxing match or anything like that and everything’s okay; it was just a misunderstanding on the part of a few journalists.

Kovalainen blames press for Piquet muddle
Friday 8 June at 14:28 : Renault rookie Heikki Kovalainen in Montreal hit out at the media for "misunderstanding" his recent comments about the French squad's test driver Nelson Piquet Junior.

The Finn had been asked which famous racer he most admired -- 1992 title winner Nigel Mansell or triple world champion Nelson Piquet, who is Piquet Jr's father.

25-year-old Kovalainen answered: "I don't really like Piquet Junior so much, so maybe Mansell."

In the paddock of Canada's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, however, Heikki denied journalists' claims that the comments had given an "insight" into his possibly thorny relationship with his Brazilian team colleague.

"I was asked a question and I wanted to make a jokey reply and it was taken literally," Kovalainen marvelled on Thursday.

He added: "Nelson and I talked about it today and we had a laugh. Everything's okay; it was just a misunderstanding on the part of a few journalists."

Fellow Finn Kimi Raikkonen, meanwhile, was asked about Kovalainen's struggle at Renault so far in 2007.

The Ferrari driver said: "He has had a difficult start to his career.

"With the car that they have now, after winning the last two championships, it is surely not easy for him."

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Happy Birthday

To be honest I don't really know them so well ? it was too early for me when they were racing. (But) I don't really like Piquet Junior so much, so maybe Mansell."

Heikki: `I don`t like Piquet Jr`

clipped from www.planet-f1.com

Heikki: `I don`t like Piquet Jr`

Heikki Kovalainen may have started a war-of-words with Nelson Piquet Jr after publicly revealing his dislike for the Renault tester.

The duo currently work together at Renault as Piquet Jr replaced Kovalainen as the team's official test driver after the Finn was promoted to race driver.

And they may even race together next season if rumours that Piquet will replace Giancarlo Fisichella as a Renault race driver next season are to be believed.

However, that doesn't mean they have to like each other, which is probably a good thing because Kovalainen "really" doesn't like the Brazilian.

Asked by ITV to chose between former F1 drivers Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet, Kovalainen's said: "To be honest I don't really know them so well - it was too early for me when they were racing."

However, he then added: "I don't really like Piquet Junior so much so maybe Mansell."

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/59400

David Coulthard

Day 8 - An interview with Guillermo Canas - Sunday, June 3, 2007

Q. How close would you say you are to your very best form on clay at the moment?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I think I am in my best performance on clay. I'm very confident in my game. I don't remember the years before how I am, but I think it's my best performance, or I feeling I'm playing my best tennis in the moment.

Q. And the first set today was almost perfect.

GUILLERMO CANAS: Yeah, I think today I play very good match. I'm very happy the way I play. I think the first set was great. I didn't miss a ball. I think, today all the match, in three sets, I'm very happy the way I play.

Q. The hot weather has hit. It's here.

GUILLERMO CANAS: Yeah.

Q. And the courts are fast and the bounces are high. Tell us what that does for your game?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, I think it's much better. I prefer this weather. I think for me it's better if the weather continue like this. Yeah, it's very different tournament. Just the ball bounce high. It's faster.

But today I really am feeling much confidence with this weather. I hope this continue like this next week.

Q. You've had so few unforced errors in your first four matches compared to your opponent. That's almost like 3 to 1. Do you get some sort of inner joy at watching yourself breakdown your opponents, forcing them into errors?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, really, I don't feel different shots. When I get to the court, I try to make not many forced errors. Just I try to -- my game is to play like this. I know if I play like this, I have a chance that the other guy start to miss a lot. And when this happen, I feel more confidence in my game. But it's the way I try to play.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish.

Q. You've said that after the first match you would talk more between Nadal and Federer. This is the second week.

GUILLERMO CANAS: Yes, this is the second week, and I'm one of the possible who can win the tournament. I'm quite happy because I've reached the quarterfinals. I have moments for the tournament it will be a little bit different. From what we've seen so far, I'm going to play against players who are very good.

But today I'm very happy because I've played against a player who has plenty of confidence. I've played my best tennis, and I'm very happy about it.

Q. About this same topic, we asked Monaco if you could be the third man between Nadal and Federer. Juan Monaco said yes. He said that you are really craving for victory.

GUILLERMO CANAS: That's true. That's true. And I'm very happy if other players make this type of comment. I would say that I have still the same mindset. I want to move forward in the tournament. It is true that I've built up some extra confidence. He's one of the best players on clay, and I've played my best tennis and it means a lot to me.

Q. Forward, imagine Nalbandian wins. If you were to play Nalbandian or Davydenko, which one would you prefer?

GUILLERMO CANAS: If I were to play against Davydenko, it's going to be a very difficult match. There will be plenty of challenges. I will try to face my opponent and I will try to play my best level.

And if I play against David Nalbandian, it will be a totally different match. I mean, I know him very well. And I've been doing for quite a long time. We spent plenty of time on the court together. So it will be a tough match for both players. And I know how he plays. He knows how I play. But I don't think that we're going to change our tactics. It will be an interesting match. And I think that we will play at a high level in order to move to the next stage.

Q. The other day you said that your best weapon in order to move out of difficult situation was your serve. But what about your defensive game? I mean, your defensive game is as important as your serve.

GUILLERMO CANAS: I've served well today. I played very accurately, and I defended myself when need be. But what is important is that I've done my job. And I've played very well and this gives me a lot of confidence in order to move forward in the tournament.

Q. What type of player are you?

GUILLERMO CANAS: The way I define myself? I don't know. It's very difficult to give a self-definition of yourself. It's very difficult. It's very difficult to look at yourself in the mirror. I would say that I'm a seasoned player. I'm an experienced player. I want to play every point as if each point was the last one of the match.

I would say that my game has been improving over the past few years. My serve has improved significantly. And I have plenty of confidence. I've moved forward. I've made some progress. And gradually I would say that I'm a more complete player. But I need to move forward. That's all.

In other words, what is important is the way you play the way I fight for each point, for each ball. And that's what matters.

Q. At this stage of the tournament, we have to recognize and acknowledge that you have done very well. It is true that the media will pay attention to Nadal, Federer, and Moya?

GUILLERMO CANAS: It's quite normal that people focus on Nadal and Federer, because they are head of the pack and they've got the best results over the past few years. It's quite normal that the media talk about them. But we are dealing with a tennis tournament, and everything can happen. There are plenty of players with a very good level. It's very difficult to defeat Federer or Nadal. But, I mean, on the tennis court I would say that I will do my best. I don't know whether it's an advantage or not whether the media talks about me or not.

Q. Any pressure?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No pressure. I don't have any pressure. I'm here to enjoy.thumbsup I want to play my best level, so I don't have any pressure as far as I'm concerned, I would say. And when I step on the tennis court, I want to enjoy. I want to savour and to take relish in these moments. It goes beyond what people would say about me.

Q. You've played your best level. If you continue the way you play, you don't have a lot of improvements to make.

GUILLERMO CANAS: There is always room for improvement. What I want to tell you is that it was the trickiest player, because he has plenty of confidence and he has got some good results.

But I've played my best, and I have plenty of confidence. But, of course, we need to move forward. And I'm quite happy with the way I played and the way I behaved on the court. And I'm full of confidence.

Q. During this match, you didn't go to the net very often. Do you think that you can reach the final without going to the net?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I think that you can reach the final of Roland Garros, whatever way you play. What is important is to play well. But, in fact, I didn't go to the net because I was playing against Juan and it was very difficult to play differently. So we have to adapt our strategies to the opponent. Of course, we have to be a little bit more aggressive from time to time. But my game hasn't changed. Basically I have a game plan. That's all.

Q. At the end of the match after all these events of your career, what about the standing ovation from the crowd? Did you realize that?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, I didn't realize that there was a standing ovation. I mean, I didn't enjoy that too much. I was very happy because I've won today. And I enjoyed stepping on the court and I enjoyed playing a tournament on this court. This is my favorite court in this stadium. And I like this court, and I enjoyed it. Of course, I wish I could enjoyed more this event with the public, but I'm very happy with it. Of course, I couldn't feel it at the utmost.

Q. You are in the second week. Your physical fitness is not at the top level?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I mean for a Grand Slam tournament you want to reach the second week. And it is true that we don't want to spend a lot of time on the tennis court. I haven't lost many sets, so I'm very happy with my results. And next Tuesday I will be on court and I will be very fit.

Q. So you played against Moya, you played against Costa. You were about to win a few years ago, but now you are five years older. So what is your assessment? Do you feel better today?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I would say that five years more didn't have a lot of impact, in fact. So I'm an old guy with plenty of experience, in fact. So it is true that as old as I am, I'm doing well. And it is true that I will spend less time on court, and I had spent less time on court. But what is important for me is to feel good without pain. It will be quite positive for me if I reach the quarterfinals.

interview with Guillermo Canas - Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Q. There are a great number of people who are denied the opportunity to watch you play today because the French Open decided to place you on Court 16 where there's fairly limited seating. Did it strike you as odd that you should be on such a small outdoor, out‑of‑the‑way court?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I really think I don't care, just I prefer to play in the big stadiums and I know that, but I knew there were gonna be a lot of matches. It's the first round, Tuesday, and many matches to play. I know they're gonna be, I don't know, maybe top seed in the big stadium, the French guy, and absolutely for me it's better if I play in the big stadium, but that was good.

It was good. It was full of people over there. Not many, but full of people. I hope the next match I play in the big, or a little bit bigger stadium.

Q. It's been a long journey back to your first Grand Slam in two years. I wonder if you could just reflect on what this means to you to be back here now?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Oh, it's great to be here. It's great to be in the French Open again. It's great to play my first Grand Slam after my suspension, and I think I enjoy a lot today, the match for today. It was so exciting. It's great to win the first match in this kind of tournament. And just I enjoy this tournament like I enjoyed the tournaments I played before, just a little bit more because my family is here.

And just I tried to do my best on the court and I tried to keep winning, or to keep going in the tournament.

But for me it's great to play here in Paris.

Q. Was there a time you doubted that you would make it back to this level?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I think ‑‑ sorry, it's warm ‑‑ sorry. Again?

Q. Was there a time that you had doubt in your mind that you would make it back to a Grand Slam?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No. Just really I knew I gonna play this kind of tournament again when I was in the suspension, but I don't know when. But I knew I gonna play a Grand Slam again. I knew I gonna play in my level, all the big level again. But I'm so happy. I'm so proud to play or to be here after six, eight months, that I start to play again. And really, I'm so happy to have this level to play my first Grand Slam.

Q. It hasn't been a sensational clay court season for you, not like on the hard courts before. After Key Biscayne, did you feel like you just needed to take a breath and relax a little bit?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, not really. It's just I think in the beginning of my season, that start in September, I play a lot of matches to March. I play very well the first tournament in clay. It was in Barcelona. I make the final. And then after that, I play just two more tournaments. It was Rome and Hamburg. I didn't have very good result, but in Rome I play good tennis. I have maybe [] the Simon, he play very well against me. And then I think I maybe start to get a little bit tired. I have some pains in my shoulder, in my back. But I think ‑‑ I think it's not bad. It's just I play three tournaments in clay. I made one final and I'm here very confident. I play very good tennis to have a great tournament here.

Q. You've got Simone Bolelli, you've never played him. Are you going to have to find out something about him in the next day or so or do you already know him?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, no, I don't know nothing about him. Just I try to find how he play. I knew he have a good result in the last few months. But really, I didn't see him play any. Just after this press conference, I go to find how he play and how he look. I know him, how he look a little bit, but how he look inside the court.

Q. We saw some great Argentine success here in Paris, particularly in 2004. What do you know of Coria and Gaudio and how do you explain what's happened to their games?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I think they are so different case. Gaston is maybe knowing his best moment, but, you know, this one is very competitive level. Sometimes happen. I hope he soon come back to his level. But it's very different case to Coria. I don't know what happened with Guillermo. I practice with him in like two months ago, after ‑‑ before Miami and he was practice very well. Just I knew he gonna start playing like months ago, but he didn't. Just really, I don't know more about him. But I hope.

They are two very important players for us and I hope both, they gonna come to the high level soon.

Q. In Gaston's case, do you think it's a loss of confidence, what's happened to him?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Yeah, I think the tennis ‑‑ more so the tennis is about mentality, confidence. Maybe he lose a little bit confidence. But we know, everybody know, he's a great tennis player, and maybe he ‑‑ maybe he want to come back with the high level. He have a chance. But really, it's a question to ask him, not to me.

Q. We've had quite a bit of rain the first couple days here, maybe a little tomorrow, maybe a little on Thursday. When the conditions are like this, slowing the courts down, and so much of your game is retrieving the ball, does that work more in your favor?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No. Really for me I really prefer the sun, warm weather, and fast court, really. But I like this kind of court, too. But I prefer when it is a little bit faster here. The ball, the balance of the ball is high. Then I prefer. But, you know, sometime in Paris, it's this weather. I think this year is worse than before. But I don't know. Just I try to continue to play the way I play. I don't care about the weather.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish, please.

Q. Well, your first match here is your first game. You came back. Did you feel comfortable? What did you feel?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, I was a bit nervous before I started the match. When you start, it's always a bit like this. But to be honest, I felt very confident. I've been here for almost a week now. And I must say I felt more confident and I'm very happy about the two first sets I played. They were quite good.

The third set was probably not the best in the match, but I'm very happy I made it very first round and in three sets.

Q. Playing in a Grand Slam is probably a different feeling. You came back in September, but it's your first Grand Slam tournament.

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, just like all Grand Slam, you experience it. You have special feelings, and I'm trying to play it differently. I've been here since last Saturday. I arrived in Paris early to try and practice, to try and get a feeling of the city. And I'm more confident. We've been here for a week. I feel good. I feel fit. And I think that beyond all this, of course, you know, when you're playing your first match, you're a bit under pressure.

But I came here with my family and it's a great pleasure for me to be here with them.

Q. How did you prepare for this from a psychological standpoint? Who is with you here in Paris?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, we prepared this a week ago. We decided on who would come with me a few weeks ago. I had played quite a few tournaments, so I was a bit tired. So I said, Well, if it's a great tournament for me, I'll be on the courts for quite a few hours. So I decided to take a one‑week break before I started this tournament. So I arrived a week early, a week ahead of time. I came here with my family. My parents are here. They're so happy. They see me back in Paris.

So I came with them and with all my team, and with some friends. So I must say, I feel very much at home. And it gives me great confidence. I'm here with my family. We have a flat, so I don't feel the pressure of Roland Garros that much.

Q. Were you surprised? I mean, you were quite powerful at the beginning of this match, not talking about the third set you just mentioned. Was it a surprise for you to be so at ease, so confident?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, no. I've been feeling well over the last days, as I said earlier. I came much ahead of time. So, you know, when you take time to prepare yourself ahead of time, you feel good. So in the last days I started preparing a few things and practicing a few shots. But I played very good first set, and then the third set, maybe I started lacking concentration a bit.

But, you know, I think it was a very positive first round. I'll play my second match tomorrow. I'm very happy I came through this first round in three sets, so I'll try and be ready for the second set.

Q. You said it in English already, but we need to listen to you in Spanish. So what do you know about your opponent, Simone Bolelli?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, as I said in English before, I don't know him very well. I know he's been playing well over the last month, but that's all I know about him. I know what he looks like, because I've seen him in the changing rooms, but I've never seen him playing. So after the press conference, I'll try and find out about the way he plays, about his game. I'll try to find information. And I'll try to get to know his game, to know how to play him in the next match.

Q. Argentina came here with 15 players. That's a record figure, but we lack a top 10. We miss a player like you in the previous years. Are you ready to endorse this role as top Argentinian player?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, I don't know, really, if I'm ready to accept this additional pressure. I think the only thing I need to do here is to make the most, to have fun, to enjoy it, and if it turns out right, I'll be very happy, because that's why I came here.

But I really don't need to do anything else, what I'm actually doing and what I've done over the last month was great, well, in my opinion at least. And I think I'll have beautiful month ahead. So I don't need to be the icon of any country, and I don't want to have this pressure on me.

Q. In Miami they talked about success outside the courts. I have a question to ask you about the TAS decision after the results you got in the legal courts. What's your opinion?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, in a nutshell I think what TAS says is not what the supreme court is asking. So they observe what the supreme court says, and they say nothing about the decision of the supreme courts, I want to repeat this again aloud, but beyond this, I think it is not the right time for me to talk about it. My lawyer is here. If you have any questions to ask, ask them to my lawyer and he will give you any answer you want. And for me, I want to focus on this tournament.
