Renault tweaks aero chief lineup
Tuesday 26 June at 09:40 : F1 team Renault has tweaked the lineup of its aerodynamics department, as Pat Symonds announced that the "tide is turning" following a difficult start to the 2007 season.

Renault won the world championships in 2005 and 2006 with Fernando Alonso at the wheel but this season with the R27 car fell behind the leading trio Ferrari, McLaren and even BMW-Sauber.

Engineering veteran Symonds said this week, however, that Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen are now hot on BMW's heels, having pulled out of the midfield over the last few races.

"We take a lot of comfort from the fact that after a poor start to the year, we are pulling it back so rapidly," the Briton insisted.

Coinciding with the positive trend, aerodynamics chief Dino Toso has been promoted to lead Renault's new CFD centre at Enstone, with former deputy technical director James Allison moving in to head the wind tunnel.

"We believe this is the right time to make the change to ensure that our work for 2008 progresses at full speed, while the team in the wind tunnel continues to push forward with development for the remainder of the 2007 season," technical director Bob Bell said.

Day 8 - An interview with Guillermo Canas - Sunday, June 3, 2007

Q. How close would you say you are to your very best form on clay at the moment?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I think I am in my best performance on clay. I'm very confident in my game. I don't remember the years before how I am, but I think it's my best performance, or I feeling I'm playing my best tennis in the moment.

Q. And the first set today was almost perfect.

GUILLERMO CANAS: Yeah, I think today I play very good match. I'm very happy the way I play. I think the first set was great. I didn't miss a ball. I think, today all the match, in three sets, I'm very happy the way I play.

Q. The hot weather has hit. It's here.

GUILLERMO CANAS: Yeah.

Q. And the courts are fast and the bounces are high. Tell us what that does for your game?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, I think it's much better. I prefer this weather. I think for me it's better if the weather continue like this. Yeah, it's very different tournament. Just the ball bounce high. It's faster.

But today I really am feeling much confidence with this weather. I hope this continue like this next week.

Q. You've had so few unforced errors in your first four matches compared to your opponent. That's almost like 3 to 1. Do you get some sort of inner joy at watching yourself breakdown your opponents, forcing them into errors?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, really, I don't feel different shots. When I get to the court, I try to make not many forced errors. Just I try to -- my game is to play like this. I know if I play like this, I have a chance that the other guy start to miss a lot. And when this happen, I feel more confidence in my game. But it's the way I try to play.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish.

Q. You've said that after the first match you would talk more between Nadal and Federer. This is the second week.

GUILLERMO CANAS: Yes, this is the second week, and I'm one of the possible who can win the tournament. I'm quite happy because I've reached the quarterfinals. I have moments for the tournament it will be a little bit different. From what we've seen so far, I'm going to play against players who are very good.

But today I'm very happy because I've played against a player who has plenty of confidence. I've played my best tennis, and I'm very happy about it.

Q. About this same topic, we asked Monaco if you could be the third man between Nadal and Federer. Juan Monaco said yes. He said that you are really craving for victory.

GUILLERMO CANAS: That's true. That's true. And I'm very happy if other players make this type of comment. I would say that I have still the same mindset. I want to move forward in the tournament. It is true that I've built up some extra confidence. He's one of the best players on clay, and I've played my best tennis and it means a lot to me.

Q. Forward, imagine Nalbandian wins. If you were to play Nalbandian or Davydenko, which one would you prefer?

GUILLERMO CANAS: If I were to play against Davydenko, it's going to be a very difficult match. There will be plenty of challenges. I will try to face my opponent and I will try to play my best level.

And if I play against David Nalbandian, it will be a totally different match. I mean, I know him very well. And I've been doing for quite a long time. We spent plenty of time on the court together. So it will be a tough match for both players. And I know how he plays. He knows how I play. But I don't think that we're going to change our tactics. It will be an interesting match. And I think that we will play at a high level in order to move to the next stage.

Q. The other day you said that your best weapon in order to move out of difficult situation was your serve. But what about your defensive game? I mean, your defensive game is as important as your serve.

GUILLERMO CANAS: I've served well today. I played very accurately, and I defended myself when need be. But what is important is that I've done my job. And I've played very well and this gives me a lot of confidence in order to move forward in the tournament.

Q. What type of player are you?

GUILLERMO CANAS: The way I define myself? I don't know. It's very difficult to give a self-definition of yourself. It's very difficult. It's very difficult to look at yourself in the mirror. I would say that I'm a seasoned player. I'm an experienced player. I want to play every point as if each point was the last one of the match.

I would say that my game has been improving over the past few years. My serve has improved significantly. And I have plenty of confidence. I've moved forward. I've made some progress. And gradually I would say that I'm a more complete player. But I need to move forward. That's all.

In other words, what is important is the way you play the way I fight for each point, for each ball. And that's what matters.

Q. At this stage of the tournament, we have to recognize and acknowledge that you have done very well. It is true that the media will pay attention to Nadal, Federer, and Moya?

GUILLERMO CANAS: It's quite normal that people focus on Nadal and Federer, because they are head of the pack and they've got the best results over the past few years. It's quite normal that the media talk about them. But we are dealing with a tennis tournament, and everything can happen. There are plenty of players with a very good level. It's very difficult to defeat Federer or Nadal. But, I mean, on the tennis court I would say that I will do my best. I don't know whether it's an advantage or not whether the media talks about me or not.

Q. Any pressure?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No pressure. I don't have any pressure. I'm here to enjoy.thumbsup I want to play my best level, so I don't have any pressure as far as I'm concerned, I would say. And when I step on the tennis court, I want to enjoy. I want to savour and to take relish in these moments. It goes beyond what people would say about me.

Q. You've played your best level. If you continue the way you play, you don't have a lot of improvements to make.

GUILLERMO CANAS: There is always room for improvement. What I want to tell you is that it was the trickiest player, because he has plenty of confidence and he has got some good results.

But I've played my best, and I have plenty of confidence. But, of course, we need to move forward. And I'm quite happy with the way I played and the way I behaved on the court. And I'm full of confidence.

Q. During this match, you didn't go to the net very often. Do you think that you can reach the final without going to the net?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I think that you can reach the final of Roland Garros, whatever way you play. What is important is to play well. But, in fact, I didn't go to the net because I was playing against Juan and it was very difficult to play differently. So we have to adapt our strategies to the opponent. Of course, we have to be a little bit more aggressive from time to time. But my game hasn't changed. Basically I have a game plan. That's all.

Q. At the end of the match after all these events of your career, what about the standing ovation from the crowd? Did you realize that?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, I didn't realize that there was a standing ovation. I mean, I didn't enjoy that too much. I was very happy because I've won today. And I enjoyed stepping on the court and I enjoyed playing a tournament on this court. This is my favorite court in this stadium. And I like this court, and I enjoyed it. Of course, I wish I could enjoyed more this event with the public, but I'm very happy with it. Of course, I couldn't feel it at the utmost.

Q. You are in the second week. Your physical fitness is not at the top level?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I mean for a Grand Slam tournament you want to reach the second week. And it is true that we don't want to spend a lot of time on the tennis court. I haven't lost many sets, so I'm very happy with my results. And next Tuesday I will be on court and I will be very fit.

Q. So you played against Moya, you played against Costa. You were about to win a few years ago, but now you are five years older. So what is your assessment? Do you feel better today?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I would say that five years more didn't have a lot of impact, in fact. So I'm an old guy with plenty of experience, in fact. So it is true that as old as I am, I'm doing well. And it is true that I will spend less time on court, and I had spent less time on court. But what is important for me is to feel good without pain. It will be quite positive for me if I reach the quarterfinals.

Today I practice at noon and after that I’ve been told that I have a few activities with the press. Actually I would prefer to be quiet and not do many things those days. Things is a question of routine, but I know that I have to do certain things. For example tomorrow the press will come when the tournament will celebrate a players’ birthday as always by bringing me a cake. I imagine that tomorrow you’ll able to see that on TV or in the newspapers. They also told me that I’ll do an interview for TVE tomorrow here at the tournament. Talking about birthdays here I remember that two years ago Pau Gasol came to the interview room in the middle of the press conference with a cake and a few bottles of Champagne. I knew that Pau was watching the match but I didn’t expect him to come with this cake. Last year it was something more artificial because it had been prepared and I imagine that tomorrow it will be something similar. I hope that this year my uncle won’t throw cake in my face as he did last year.

interview with Guillermo Canas - Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Q. There are a great number of people who are denied the opportunity to watch you play today because the French Open decided to place you on Court 16 where there's fairly limited seating. Did it strike you as odd that you should be on such a small outdoor, out‑of‑the‑way court?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I really think I don't care, just I prefer to play in the big stadiums and I know that, but I knew there were gonna be a lot of matches. It's the first round, Tuesday, and many matches to play. I know they're gonna be, I don't know, maybe top seed in the big stadium, the French guy, and absolutely for me it's better if I play in the big stadium, but that was good.

It was good. It was full of people over there. Not many, but full of people. I hope the next match I play in the big, or a little bit bigger stadium.

Q. It's been a long journey back to your first Grand Slam in two years. I wonder if you could just reflect on what this means to you to be back here now?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Oh, it's great to be here. It's great to be in the French Open again. It's great to play my first Grand Slam after my suspension, and I think I enjoy a lot today, the match for today. It was so exciting. It's great to win the first match in this kind of tournament. And just I enjoy this tournament like I enjoyed the tournaments I played before, just a little bit more because my family is here.

And just I tried to do my best on the court and I tried to keep winning, or to keep going in the tournament.

But for me it's great to play here in Paris.

Q. Was there a time you doubted that you would make it back to this level?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I think ‑‑ sorry, it's warm ‑‑ sorry. Again?

Q. Was there a time that you had doubt in your mind that you would make it back to a Grand Slam?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No. Just really I knew I gonna play this kind of tournament again when I was in the suspension, but I don't know when. But I knew I gonna play a Grand Slam again. I knew I gonna play in my level, all the big level again. But I'm so happy. I'm so proud to play or to be here after six, eight months, that I start to play again. And really, I'm so happy to have this level to play my first Grand Slam.

Q. It hasn't been a sensational clay court season for you, not like on the hard courts before. After Key Biscayne, did you feel like you just needed to take a breath and relax a little bit?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, not really. It's just I think in the beginning of my season, that start in September, I play a lot of matches to March. I play very well the first tournament in clay. It was in Barcelona. I make the final. And then after that, I play just two more tournaments. It was Rome and Hamburg. I didn't have very good result, but in Rome I play good tennis. I have maybe [] the Simon, he play very well against me. And then I think I maybe start to get a little bit tired. I have some pains in my shoulder, in my back. But I think ‑‑ I think it's not bad. It's just I play three tournaments in clay. I made one final and I'm here very confident. I play very good tennis to have a great tournament here.

Q. You've got Simone Bolelli, you've never played him. Are you going to have to find out something about him in the next day or so or do you already know him?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, no, I don't know nothing about him. Just I try to find how he play. I knew he have a good result in the last few months. But really, I didn't see him play any. Just after this press conference, I go to find how he play and how he look. I know him, how he look a little bit, but how he look inside the court.

Q. We saw some great Argentine success here in Paris, particularly in 2004. What do you know of Coria and Gaudio and how do you explain what's happened to their games?

GUILLERMO CANAS: I think they are so different case. Gaston is maybe knowing his best moment, but, you know, this one is very competitive level. Sometimes happen. I hope he soon come back to his level. But it's very different case to Coria. I don't know what happened with Guillermo. I practice with him in like two months ago, after ‑‑ before Miami and he was practice very well. Just I knew he gonna start playing like months ago, but he didn't. Just really, I don't know more about him. But I hope.

They are two very important players for us and I hope both, they gonna come to the high level soon.

Q. In Gaston's case, do you think it's a loss of confidence, what's happened to him?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Yeah, I think the tennis ‑‑ more so the tennis is about mentality, confidence. Maybe he lose a little bit confidence. But we know, everybody know, he's a great tennis player, and maybe he ‑‑ maybe he want to come back with the high level. He have a chance. But really, it's a question to ask him, not to me.

Q. We've had quite a bit of rain the first couple days here, maybe a little tomorrow, maybe a little on Thursday. When the conditions are like this, slowing the courts down, and so much of your game is retrieving the ball, does that work more in your favor?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No. Really for me I really prefer the sun, warm weather, and fast court, really. But I like this kind of court, too. But I prefer when it is a little bit faster here. The ball, the balance of the ball is high. Then I prefer. But, you know, sometime in Paris, it's this weather. I think this year is worse than before. But I don't know. Just I try to continue to play the way I play. I don't care about the weather.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish, please.

Q. Well, your first match here is your first game. You came back. Did you feel comfortable? What did you feel?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, I was a bit nervous before I started the match. When you start, it's always a bit like this. But to be honest, I felt very confident. I've been here for almost a week now. And I must say I felt more confident and I'm very happy about the two first sets I played. They were quite good.

The third set was probably not the best in the match, but I'm very happy I made it very first round and in three sets.

Q. Playing in a Grand Slam is probably a different feeling. You came back in September, but it's your first Grand Slam tournament.

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, just like all Grand Slam, you experience it. You have special feelings, and I'm trying to play it differently. I've been here since last Saturday. I arrived in Paris early to try and practice, to try and get a feeling of the city. And I'm more confident. We've been here for a week. I feel good. I feel fit. And I think that beyond all this, of course, you know, when you're playing your first match, you're a bit under pressure.

But I came here with my family and it's a great pleasure for me to be here with them.

Q. How did you prepare for this from a psychological standpoint? Who is with you here in Paris?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, we prepared this a week ago. We decided on who would come with me a few weeks ago. I had played quite a few tournaments, so I was a bit tired. So I said, Well, if it's a great tournament for me, I'll be on the courts for quite a few hours. So I decided to take a one‑week break before I started this tournament. So I arrived a week early, a week ahead of time. I came here with my family. My parents are here. They're so happy. They see me back in Paris.

So I came with them and with all my team, and with some friends. So I must say, I feel very much at home. And it gives me great confidence. I'm here with my family. We have a flat, so I don't feel the pressure of Roland Garros that much.

Q. Were you surprised? I mean, you were quite powerful at the beginning of this match, not talking about the third set you just mentioned. Was it a surprise for you to be so at ease, so confident?

GUILLERMO CANAS: No, no. I've been feeling well over the last days, as I said earlier. I came much ahead of time. So, you know, when you take time to prepare yourself ahead of time, you feel good. So in the last days I started preparing a few things and practicing a few shots. But I played very good first set, and then the third set, maybe I started lacking concentration a bit.

But, you know, I think it was a very positive first round. I'll play my second match tomorrow. I'm very happy I came through this first round in three sets, so I'll try and be ready for the second set.

Q. You said it in English already, but we need to listen to you in Spanish. So what do you know about your opponent, Simone Bolelli?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, as I said in English before, I don't know him very well. I know he's been playing well over the last month, but that's all I know about him. I know what he looks like, because I've seen him in the changing rooms, but I've never seen him playing. So after the press conference, I'll try and find out about the way he plays, about his game. I'll try to find information. And I'll try to get to know his game, to know how to play him in the next match.

Q. Argentina came here with 15 players. That's a record figure, but we lack a top 10. We miss a player like you in the previous years. Are you ready to endorse this role as top Argentinian player?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, I don't know, really, if I'm ready to accept this additional pressure. I think the only thing I need to do here is to make the most, to have fun, to enjoy it, and if it turns out right, I'll be very happy, because that's why I came here.

But I really don't need to do anything else, what I'm actually doing and what I've done over the last month was great, well, in my opinion at least. And I think I'll have beautiful month ahead. So I don't need to be the icon of any country, and I don't want to have this pressure on me.

Q. In Miami they talked about success outside the courts. I have a question to ask you about the TAS decision after the results you got in the legal courts. What's your opinion?

GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, in a nutshell I think what TAS says is not what the supreme court is asking. So they observe what the supreme court says, and they say nothing about the decision of the supreme courts, I want to repeat this again aloud, but beyond this, I think it is not the right time for me to talk about it. My lawyer is here. If you have any questions to ask, ask them to my lawyer and he will give you any answer you want. And for me, I want to focus on this tournament.

RG_R3-JUNE1_NALBY-INTERVIEW

Q. Canas just said that the match he played was like a Davis Cup match because there were a lot of Belgians in his match. And you played against a French. The crowd was against you. It seems like you Argentinians like to play in these kind of conditions against the crowd. How do you think about that?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, for me I don't mind. I just try to be out there and try to play my best. It doesn't matter if the crowd is with me or against me, like today. But you try to play your tennis and try to win. So that doesn't mind, the people. If the people are with you, of course, better.

But in this case, it's normal, you know. Play with a French guy Center Court. It's normal that almost everyone's going to be against you.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish.

Q. What about this match? What is your assessment? Is it a good match? Is it a big match?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: I would say that it was a good match. It was a tough match. All these sets were tough, tricky, had to fight for every point. At the end of each set, I mean, we were almost on par, and there was some wind. And it is true that we had to fight for points because of the wind. But I felt good, and I'm happy.

Q. At the end of the match, I mean, you celebrated the match to a certain extent. It means a lot for you to reach the Round of 16 in order to repeat the performance of last year?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Of course. I need to produce other matches. I'm under the impression that I played confident, and I played well.

Q. So what about Davydenko? You know him, so what is your assessment about this match?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: I know him. I mean, we played ‑‑ we played against one another very often. He is a consistent player on virtue. I've played against him repeatedly. And I've won, and from time to time, I've lost.

Q. When you started the match, you said that your form was at 60%, and the rhythm was not good. But what about this match? With this match you've been able to bring up some energy.

DAVID NALBANDIAN: It was a good match. But the weather was too windy, and I felt good. And I played better than the other day. I am more confident. I'm calmer.

Q. Physically speaking, are you tired?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: No, I'm not tired. I was okay. Of course, you're tired after a match. But that was okay on the whole.

Q. Any game plan for this match? How did you envision your match?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: I wanted to win at any price. In fact, I didn't play this player very well. So it is very difficult to figure out what you're going to do. You step on the court; you play. And then you try to fire some good shots and so forth. But as I told you, it was tough. I won three sets, but these sets were quite close.

Q. So there was a tiebreak, and you were quite good in the tie break. I mean, you served very well.

DAVID NALBANDIAN: I played well.

http://www.tennis.com.cn

Nadal: 'He Said I'm A Pain In The Neck'

Baseline Blog: "Nadal: 'He Said I'm A Pain In The Neck'

Rafael Nadal and his mentor Carlos Moya aren't only competitive on court. They are also 'serious' about their Playstation time.

Nadal responded to a win by Moya and Nalbandian by turning off playstation, leading Moya to jokingly call his younger fellow Mallorca 'a pain in the neck.'

Question: Carlos Moya said you played a lot with your Playstation and that he defeated you?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, he won yesterday.

Question: He said it was more difficult than practicing.
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I'm not going to make any comment on that, but I think we are very, very competitive with our Playstations together. Moya and Nalbandian played on a team, and they beat us. So we decided to turn off the play station, and they said, 'Well, that's unfair.'

Question: I think there is a crisis here ‑‑
RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, I know. Yes, I know, I know. He said I'm a pain in the neck. Okay. But he is. He is the one. He just doesn't accept anything. So I'm going to apply sanctions because he broke my remote control, and I'm just left with my Playstation. It's always very expensive, and I'm not the one breaking it."

Returning to the play-station, I’m going to tell just a little and will write more some other time. It is already somewhat known on tour that we play soccer matches in each tournament. When the four of us are in the same tournament and above all at the same hotel, we usually play some matches, Carlos Moya and David Nalbandian against David Ferrer and me. The day before yesterday, we played and lost. Carlos, who is quite good and assertive, they beat us. However, yesterday’s [match] was UNBELIEVABLE! We always play the best of 5 matches, 5 sets as we call it. Whoever has three wins and whoever loses does something that we bet on like some push-ups or whatever.

In this case, Ferru (David Ferrer) and I won the first two matches and in the third one, which should have been the decisive one, we marked the golden goal… It looked like we had won. We started to jump around and all, when suddenly we saw that they had cancelled our goal for being offside. Golden goal, and the referee overturned it. Unbelievable. In the end, as you might imagine, we lost the three matches. This is the story – so sad and so unfair, hahahaha. Today, we were not able to play, but we’ll see to it that we get our revenge soon. But first David has to get a new remote control, because he broke one yesterday.

Gaudio's Future Still Uncertain

Gaston Gaudio has toyed with the idea of retiring throughout his disappointing 2007 season.

After his loss today to Lleyton Hewitt in the second round of Roland Garros after being up two sets to love, the Argentine is still uncertain of his future tennis plans.

Question: What about your schedule now? Will you go back to Buenos Aires?
GASTON GAUDIO: No. I don't know. I don't know what I'm going to do. No idea at all.

Question: Are you going to continue playing until the end of the year?
GASTON GAUDIO: Maybe, maybe. Frankly, I don't know. I mean, I haven't reflected on that. I don't know what I'm going to do, in fact.

我们家高美啊banghead ";})();ButtonMouseDown(this);'>cry

Q. Was it a frustrating experience for you?

GASTON GAUDIO: I'm used to it. (Laughing).

Q. Gaston, four years ago or two years ago you win here. The guy that you beat is not here anymore. How do you feel about Coria, Guillermo? Do you think he's going to come back? And do you feel sad he's having problems right now?

GASTON GAUDIO: I don't know. It's going to be pretty tough to get back. I don't know what the ranking of him now, but he must fight a lot to come back.

Actually, the tennis that he's got is unbelievable. He's a great player. So if he wants to be back, he's going to be here. But it's not going to be easy for him.

Q. Do you know very much about his status, how he's doing right now?

GASTON GAUDIO: No, no idea.

Q. You haven't practiced or seen him lately?

GASTON GAUDIO: No, I haven't seen him.
evil

Q. When you won here, it was a great achievement. Has it, in some way, sort of been a shadow on what you've done since?

GASTON GAUDIO: Of course. After I won, I was playing pretty good, too. You know, in 2005, then I tried to, you know, get tired a little bit in 2006. And then after that ‑‑ well, actually everybody knows this year is one of the worst in my entire career, so...

So we'll see what happens. I don't know. I can't turn over, you know.

Q. You seem to be quite cool after this defeat, you are not disappointed? How do you feel about this defeat?

GASTON GAUDIO: I feel a little bit better, I would say. I just lost, so I'm a little bit angry or cross. But I don't know what to tell you about it. I'm relatively confident with my game. I'm quite happy with my game, but there is a downside because I lost in the second round. I mean, I lost in the quarterfinals, so it's a kind of ambivalent feeling.
